Apple TV 4K lets you watch movies and shows in amazing 4K HDR — and now it completes the picture with immersive sound from Dolby Atmos. Stream your favorite channels live. Enjoy great content from apps like Amazon Prime Video, HBO NOW, Hulu, and Netflix. And thanks to Siri, you can control it all with just your voice. Find sports from apps like NBA and MLB. Late-breaking news from apps like Bloomberg and CNN. And complete live-channel and on-demand packages from apps such as DirecTV Now, YouTube TV, and Sling TV.
Update January 2019: Recent test drove the new Apple 4K tv at a friend’s home. The experience was a necessary evolution from the former Apple TV hardware/software platform. The remote is a vast improvement over its predecessor and the app display is much more like a computer and or mobile device desktop view. One suggestion is to add a google search or browser application for the Apple 4k platform. I do like the idea of utilizing the Coursera online course application on this much larger than iPad or mobile view. Apple, thank you! Great improvements over the old Apple TV platform.
May 2019 update: Previewed the Amazon Fire stick 4K and in so many ways this is a small step for convenience and easy learning curve for those who have tried the Apple 4K platform. Where Amazon Fire stick 4K wins over Apple 4K is the Firestick’s tie in with Alexa on channel search and the quick program finds and opens. Firestick 4K app platform provides two browser options (Firefox and Amazon own browser). Where Firestick lost me was the screensaver where we are not given the option of adding our favorite Flickr feed of images rather one is left with either the default or choosing to share our cherished images with Amazon images loading from the same.
July 2019: Full conversion from Apple TV to Amazon 4K Firestick. One important reason: Superior remote and Alexa tie in. The one big ask from Amazon is to allow us to link to our favorite Flickr photostream rather than upload our images from the cloud or Google Drive onto your platform or rest on the default stream.
I have one of the first generation Apple tv connected, via HDTV cable, to a Samsung HD 1080P LCD 39 Inch TV. I am more than pleased with the picture quality and the mostly free streaming, in spite of the mandatory must watch adverts. Apple TV with Amazon Prime makes subscription streaming over subscription cable a no brainer for me. Remember that Amazon Prime free movies, tv and shipping pay for the annual or monthly subscription even before you add in the Prime discounts at Whole Foods (based on routine and regular utilization). I was quite satisfied (see comparison anxiety 101) until walking the aisles of Costco recently with a close friend and longtime Costco member and catching the lucid-crisp-flawless-hyperreal-picture image clarity of a 4K display broadcast. The keyword in the aforementioned sentence is 4K broadcast. To truly enjoy the remarkable 4K viewing experience, one must first receive a 4K broadcast program or channel and watch the 4K broadcast on a 4K technology TV/monitor.
Do we need the very best picture quality to be happy? You know we do not! Yet, since this young Irish lad was a wee li’l munchkin he has always had a penchant for the best and finest new gadgets. Looking for a hyper-technical review of the new Apple TV or Roku there are plenty of other websites dedicated to the tech nerd. My review is for those who know what they like and enjoy the best overall value in audio-video new technology. Right now, the TCL 4K Roku TV series wins the prize for the best overall value, hands down.
