The Day My Father Died a new album

SYML is the solo venture of Brian Fennell, who was previously part of the indie band Barcelona. SYML released his eponymous debut album on May 3, 2019, through Nettwerk Records. Now we have a new release, The Day My Father Died to inspire us.  We have covered one-man creative efforts throughout our tenure, including the Bahamas by Afie Jurvane, and know that many strong band members stand behind/beside these great creators.

Fennell performs under the solo project SYML, Welsh for “simple” and pronounced “sim-muhl,” inspired by his heritage from his biological parents, who are Welsh. His experience grappling with his adoption and heritage influences his songwriting. Brian’s vocals might be compared to Bon Iver to the casual listener.  Listen with good headphones or earbuds, like the top-rated Bose Quiet Comfort. You will hear a unique voice crafted by Brian Fennell after working with his college grad friends in Barcelona and, more recently, collaborating with Lana Del Ray.  There is abundant Brian Fennell, Barcelona, and SYML band information online, so we will not replicate/regurgitate any here.  Today’s journey began with a live acoustic set of new songs featured on 91.7 WICB radio and the KEXP studio (10/2022) show featured in this article.

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II Headphone

This wireless Bluetooth model from Bose delivers very good sound quality and active noise reduction, combining elements of in-ear and earbud earphones. These earphones have an isolating design and an ambient sound monitoring feature; they will provide some muffling and electronic canceling of external noises and reduce the amount of sound that escapes from the earpieces. As such, they are best for those who want highly portable earphones that reduce the noise they hear from their surroundings or don’t want the sound from the earpieces to disturb others.

“MUSIC IS OBVIOUSLY A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE CAN BE MOVED BY, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO WORDS SOMETIME.”

Brian Fennell (SYML)

October 29, 2017 – On a rain-soaked Sunday evening, Seattle-based SYML (Brian Fennell) performs live in the Fraser Performance Studio at WGBH in Boston. We got a chance to sit down with SYML before the show to talk about his search for identity and how that search has inspired his music. He also shares the story behind his stage moniker and some of the funnier made-up acronyms for SYML.

Oana Cernat: Tell me three songs that everyone should hear.

SYML: I think the new Bon Iver is great, he had a song that is called “Hey, Ma” that is amazing, and also “Faith” is amazing too on that album. “Don’t Miss It” by James Blake is also beautiful and the new project of Brandi Carlile called “The Highwomen” with the song that I really love: “If She Ever Leaves Me”.
