My first exposure to Mandolin Orange was an early, first year, performance of Mandolin Orange at The ENO festival river stage. It was Andrew’s deep Southern baritone that lured me to the small shade stage in a stand of trees. A mix of lyrically mature, subtle well-crafted songs, kept me close to the stage for the rest of the set. This duo was different from the average blend of Eno performers that year and certainly chronologically younger than the majority.

Geer Street Beer Garden was an abandoned service station, and Motorco was still an active garage. Durham was the home of the Rice diet, and many folks came here for Duke University Health care, particularly the Rice diet program

You may not be familiar with this song as it was not a major radio track from the Darkness and Light Album. It is my favorite track as it has blues, R&B, and Gospel elements and it is the most honest and autobiographical of all songs penned and performed by Mr. John Legend. One finds oneself proclaiming “Amen”!

I heard Afro Blue for the first time when the choreography for the Dayton Dance Company ADF performance featured this track at Stewart Theatre back in 1996. I was mesmerized by the dancer’s hypnotic synchronized movement to this Afro Blue Coltrane track. Such an incredible tour de force the way it builds momentum, from a very subtle intro, middle, and crescendo (inspirational)!

I mainly wanted to confirm my initial impression of Tom Hulce, Mozart’s performance as more than helium laugh farcical. In contrast, actors F. Murray Abraham, Solieri, and Tom Hulce’s Mozart are readily apparent. Was this contrast more indication of acting understanding or lack thereof or prescribed by the screenplay, director, and Mr. Hulce’s full-throttle performance as the ribald, entitled spoiled prodigy, Amadeus Mozart?

Made with kombucha and crafted with natural ingredients, this hot sauce is an aged cayenne pepper sauce that is the perfect blend of hot, tangy, and savory. Full of flavor with a nice kick, but not too hot to really taste and enjoy. The kombucha vinegar makes the flavor truly unique.

For Andrea Reusing—an award-winning chef, a leader in the sustainable agriculture movement, and a working mother—”cooking in the moment” simply means focusing on one meal at a time. Tender spring broccoli given a smoky char on the grill, a summer berry pudding with cold cream, or a cider-braised pork shoulder served with pan-fried apples on a frosty night—cooking and eating this way allows food in season to become the foundation of a full life. Cooking in the Moment is a rich, absorbing journey through a year in Reusing’s home kitchen as she cooks for family and friends using ingredients grown nearby.

Feb. 20, 2019 | Felix Contreras — Something happens when you get a chance to see Afro-Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez perform. First of all, his smile radiates. It’s hard to imagine someone happier than he is to make music in front of people; and as we saw during his turn behind Bob Boilen’s desk, he mesmerizes with this almost otherworldly talent on congas. His hands can be a blur because they move so quickly. To the untrained eye, it’s hard to see exactly what he is doing to draw out the sounds he does from his drums. I even know a little about playing hand drums and it still doesn’t make it easier to fathom his remarkable talent.

This year, I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to help my clients who keep telling me about certain symptoms that they are struggling with and it seemed to boil down to “poor gut health”. Our daily diets are wrecking havoc on our bodies and our bodies are not happy with us.
Our body is responding in the form of pain, discomfort, weight gain, and disease. I truly believe that if we can improve our nutrition, we can heal and fix a lot of problems that are going on with our bodies or at least allow our bodies to make it easier for the medication and treatments to have an environment to truly work and do their job.
In this video I answer the questions:
1. What is Kombucha?
2. Why is it important for Gut Health?
3. What does it do?
4. Where can I buy it?
5. What are my favorite flavors and brands?
Do you drink Kombucha? What other questions do you have about it?
Disclaimer: I’m not saying it cures anything, but I do think that you should give it a try if you are having issues with your GI, digestion, weight or low energy. Also, talk to your doctor more about it if you have a pre-existing condition.

.
What’s the first thing Joye wants folks to know about Durham right off the bat?
.
“Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing. I think Durham is misrepresented a lot. I think that Durham has in the past and probably even still now gets a bad rap for something that maybe a minority, a small group of people, will do. They paint the whole city that way. Really, it’s just about understanding.

What are your thoughts on this important topic, education for undocumented immigrants? There is an easy “Ten Word response” we often hear from politicians who give us the Ten-word answers to complicated issues like health care and immigration. Yes, “repeal Obamacare” but replace it with What? Not so easily done as this congress has just demonstrated. Now wisdom tells us we need to fix what is not working with ATC and not throw out the healthy aspects of this legislation.

How Would Forgiveness Change Your Life? There was a time not so long ago when my relationship with my brother was strained at best. The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya Which Liberates Upon Seeing is located at the Shambhala Mountain Center in Colorado, USA. It was built to inter the ashes of Chogyam Trungpa, who died in 1987. In many Buddhist traditions it is common to build a stupa to honour a respected teacher after their death.

Ignorance might be bliss but only for a short time. Imagine the positive impact a greater general knowledge of the natural world might have with our National climate change discussion? How might this increased awareness influence our decisions about finite resources and fragile eco-systems? Right now our planet is at a critical juncture. It is past time overdue to seek out verifiable, scientifically supported, factual information about our current climate crisis. This is not an issue we can leave in the exclusive domain of career corporate politicians.

It’s here. We’re announcing our plans to create a new type of “university” and lifestyle for people who don’t want their kids growing up in an obsolete industrial-age system. But this is more than just for our children, it’s an attempt to change how we live, grow and develop, no matter if you’re 17 or 70. It’s a re-imagining of college, campus, curriculum and community for a new age.

I’m so proud and excited to kick off our US tour this week as we head south. It feels wonderful to be back on the road (we just had a ball on a hop in the UK with Jerry Douglas’s Transatlantic sessions) and I am looking forward to some wide open adventures on stage and off. I’m really proud of where the show is right now, so I hope you can make it out. Most importantly, thank you to all of you for your cheering and support of Stitch of the World. The record was not an easy record to write, and I am profoundly touched that it has been welcomed so kindly into the world. As ever, much goodness to you and yours from my house. Nothing approximates the taste of Bagels and lox with capers, and a red onion slice. This combo can not be replicated in a vegetarian analog. The fundamentals of culinary art, sweet and savory in perfect balance. Saline and sugar, the Yang and the Yin. You must try this before you leave your body. May not be consumed alone. Must enjoy with friends and family. A weekend repast, preferably on Sunday with the fattest newspaper on the table. New York Sunday Times will do in a pinch.

Recently we published an article about Treadmill desks on Durham Cool, written by my sister in law, Heather Langan. January is the “do or die” manifestation month for your New Year’s resolution. One’s normative experience with resolutions is they appear in the well-intentioned mind on New Year’s eve and disappear quickly into the lost dryer machine sock ether the next month. It takes an Army of life coaches to keep you honest on your commitments. Only the best households with plenty of Facebook photographic evidence to show for it, keep their New Year’s Eve commitments. What about the rest of us? A new habit takes at least 30 days to take hold, right? We have all heard this before.

Citizens have many rights, but rights have limits. For example,
you are free to speak your opinion. Yet it is against the law to shout “Fire!” in a public place if there is no fire. Rights come with responsibilities. Every citizen has responsibilities. Laws explain our responsibilities. Obeying laws is an important responsibility. A person who breaks a law may go to jail. However, if a law is unfair, citizens can change it. Adult citizens have many responsibilities. They may serve in the military or on a jury. They also have the responsibility to vote. Citizens vote to choose leaders. Sometimes they vote about changing laws. Citizens need to learn about the issues and then vote. Their opinions will not count if they do not vote.”

One very important quality of leadership is the ability to exercise restraint in the interest of civility. Appealing to the higher instincts, present in all human beings, rather than pandering to baser impulses. We know from history what happens when leaders appeal to the most animalistic desires, sublimated in the human psyche. One need only conduct a brief study of (choose your Fascist) to see how this happens.

This low thunder quiet Fall September evening is pregnant with my earliest Durham NC memories. When I arrived here in October 1995 my brother and me along with mutual friends would drive down to Raleigh to catch a show at the Brewery. 70 was the route we took. This evening, coming back from a training class on Millbrook and Creedmoor in Raleigh I was reminded of those evenings. Many that know me well also know that I have not been uber keen on Durham lately. This drive home changed something deep within me. I fell in love with Durham again.

My dad is not perfect. No human being is perfect. My dad grew up in Scranton, PA in a humble home. His father was a barber who kept his shop in the basement of their Myrtle Street home. Life was not easy for dad and his 4 siblings. Alcohol was a catalyst in the levity and Irish working class violence in their family home.

It was a cloudy Sunday morning in July when I drove to my client’s house in Durham. I had been missing my Asheville friends. That cute little mountain town had been the first stop in my relocation to North Carolina. I was easing my way back to the East Coast after ten years of living in Southern California and Asheville was my baby step towards living in the south. As a Tarot card reader and Massage therapist it was easier to find my tribes in quirky, laid back towns like these. Raleigh became a destination because I wanted to be closer to my family; namely my niece and nephew.
