HAIM – Want You Back (Live from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon)
WHOLE SHOW! HAIM @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO 5/28/18 (HD Video/HQ Sound)
Every once in a while there comes along an artist who restores your faith in (real) music. They capture you with familiarity. They keep you with their novelty. And all of a sudden you’re energized, inspired, touched in that unexplainable way that sorta just shook the earth beneath your feet. Totally turned on. HAIM hails from LA. They’re a band fronted by three sisters with two chaps in the back on drums and keys. They’ve got a deadly and powerful cocktail of impactful, raspy and emotion-laced vocals; song structures that avoid staid, expected progressions; catchy lyrics (in a good way); the stage banter of someone comfortable in their skin and sense of humor; and mega-solos. Artist comparisons flooded my head as I watched; Fleetwood Mac, The XX, John Mayer, Tracy Chapman, Nirvana; and yet they’re incomparable.
Haim: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. June 17, 2020, | Cyrena Touros — Strung aloft the breezy sax melody of “Summer Girl” is the reminder that California is a state of mind. At least it was at one point. For Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, California is also a more permanent state of residence these days. All three sisters are back home in Los Angeles while self-quarantining, where each recorded their part for HAIM’s Tiny Desk (home) concert in their separate Silver Lake residences. But California is also a sound HAIM brings wherever it goes, even as the band explores new terrain on its cheekily titled upcoming album, Women in Music Pt. III. The sunny, take-no-prisoners assertion of the independence of “The Steps” recalls the soft rock jams of 2013’s Days Are Gone and 2017’s Something to Tell You, but the muted techno glimmer of “I Know Alone” is new, as is the moodiness of “Summer Girl,” a song that wavers like a heat mirage reflected off New York’s summer sidewalks, thanks to Henry Solomon’s whisper-toned sax. HAIM recorded its Tiny Desk set before the death of George Floyd and released “Summer Girl” last year. The world has changed a lot in that time. With its opening line — “LA on my mind, I can’t breathe” — “Summer Girl” becomes another piece of music that takes on a parallel meaning in the evolving social and political landscape of 2020. SETLIST “The Steps” “I Know Alone” “Summer Girl” MUSICIANS Este Haim: bass, keyboard, drum pad, vocals; Danielle Haim: guitar, vocals; Alana Haim: guitar, vocals, bongos; Henry Solomon: saxophone CREDITS Artist Video Producer: Ariel Rechtshaid; Producers: Bob Boilen; Audio Mastering Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Video Producers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Maia Stern; Associate Producer: Bobby Carter; Executive Producer: Lauren Onkey; Senior VP, Programming: Anya Grundmann
Haim – That Don’t Impress Me Much (Shania Twain cover) – Oakland, Live, 9-7-17, front row, Fox Theater. Alana: So, everybody should know the words to this one! At ~5:20 Este remembers some of the lyrics differently, though 😛 Other Tidbits: Danielle was diagnosed with laryngitis earlier in the week and the band had to cancel 2 shows (Seattle and Vancouver) because her doctor put her on full vocal rest until her vocal cords get better. As a result, Este and Alana took on more singing parts and they all encouraged the fans to sing with them. Alana (before ‘Little of Your Love’): I don’t know if you know this, but Danielle has been sick. Laryngitis. And her doctor said she shouldn’t sing… Danielle: But I said “Fu*k that! I’m going to make this show.” My sisters are going to help me out, and I want you to sing along with me! Alana: It feels so good to play the new record! That was an adventure for both of us. We’ve never played ‘Ready for You’, so that was for you guys! Danielle (before ‘Falling’): We’re definitely warmed up. Este: So because we’re warmed up, I feel like, for this next song, I’m going to need… some major… ass and titties shaking. lol Alana: We’re going to be watching you… dance. We’re going to watch you. So keep that in mind 😛 Alana: My voice is cracking up like I’m at my bat mitzvah… But this date was so special that my parents are here… I don’t know where they are… Oh! I see my dad. 😛 Haim’s parents were in fact in the audience, apparently in the VIP section behind and slightly above the GA pit. At the end of ‘Falling’ Este actually crowd surfed over there to see them(!) lol Este: That song (‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’) came out in 19…98? Right? So I was maybe like 11 or 12 when that song came out. You know how when you you’re a kid and you hear lyrics and you’re like ‘that’s definitely what she said’? I thought, when she said, ‘I can’t believe you kiss your car good night’, I heard ‘I can’t believe you kiss your cock at night’. What twisted 12-year-old was I? Danielle: Este, there are minors here! Come on! lol Alana: Our fu*king parents are here dude! Este: Your daughter at 12 was pretty fu*king weird. I don’t think this is news to you. 😛 Setlist: 1. Want You Back 2. Don’t Save Me 3. Little of Your Love 4. My Song 5 5. That Don’t Impress Me Much (Shania Twain cover) 6. Ready For You (Live debut) 7. Found It In Silence 8. Forever 9. The Wire 10. Falling Encore: 11.
