This is such a great track-Legend-sings it from the heart

John Legend Boston at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion and opens up the show with “I Know Better,” a track from his latest album, Darkness and Light.   You may not be familiar with this song as it was not a major radio track from the Darkness and Light Album.    It is my favorite track as it has blues, R&B, and Gospel elements, and it is the most honest and autobiographical of all songs penned and performed by Mr. John Legend.  One finds oneself proclaiming, “Amen”!

The studio version is featured on Durham Cool, as it was the track that inspired this author to stand up against the injustice of the 2016 National election outcome.  Divisions based on race, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic grounds are illusionary, and we know it in the marrow of our bones.    We are not these bodies that give us the false illusion of difference.  We are in these bodies for this lifetime, yet we are much bigger than these mortal bodies when we come together in peace.

They say sing what you know But I’ve sung what they want Some folks do what they’re told But baby this time I won’t Will look through that door I know the truth won’t lie Some things I’ve done before I can’t justify There are kings in my past Things no one can be proud of But I stand in the light I’ve cast And turn away from any lack of love, Oh, and I walked through that door I say here I go You see me and nothing more I’m singing what I know I know better I know better Legend is just a name I know better than to be so proud I won’t drink in all this fame I’ll take more love than I’m allowed I won’t have to cut it off from where it came to My history has brought me to this place This power and the color of my face And I know better, oh I know better, oh I’ll rise from the floor if I don’t win I’ll bust open that door so let me in And the music chooses me to sing I let her I’ll sing what I know, yes I know better, oh I know better, yes I know better I know better

John Legend: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

August 3, 2020, | Bob Boilen – John Legend fully embraced the spirit of the Tiny Desk for his quarantine concert. He filmed this four-song performance in an office, in this case, the Los Angeles office of his management company Friends At Work. He endearingly refers to his piano as his “tiny desk.” He flew his seven-piece band out from Philadelphia to fill that office with utter joy. Okay, I know. John Legend has been a Voice Coach, Jesus Christ Superstar, Married to Chrissie, serenaded President and first lady Obama, hosted award shows, well-earned multi-millionaire but if you got it, flaunt it famously and forever to your adoring fans. Count us amongst them. Our line is Vegas casino shows and or cruise ships. Please keep it real with great songwriting, noblesse obliges, vocal finesse, piano mastery, frontman performance skill.
