Folk rocker Andrew Bird has reunited with his former Squirrel Nut Zippers bandmate for a new joint album.
Discovered this new creative effort while exploring the solo work of Andrew Bird and Bird’s collaboration with artist Tift Merrit.
Andrew Bird worked with Jimbo Mathus in the swing and jazz ensemble in the late 1990s, and they reconnected last year when Bird joined the group on its song “Train on Fire.”
Squirrel Nut Zippers is an American swing and jazz band formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, by James “Jimbo” Mathus (vocals and guitar), Tom Maxwell (vocals and guitar), Katharine Whalen (vocals, banjo, ukulele), Chris Phillips (drums), Don Raleigh (bass guitar), and Ken Mosher.
The band’s music is a fusion of Delta blues, gypsy jazz, the 1930s–era swing, klezmer, and other styles. They found commercial success during the swing revival of the late 1990s with their 1996 single “Hell,” written by Tom Maxwell. After a hiatus of several years, the original band members reunited and performed in 2007, playing in the U.S. and Canada.
In 2016, Mathus and Phillips reunited the band with a new lineup to tour to support the 20th anniversary of their highest-selling album, Hot.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers continued to tour and released their new album, Beasts of Burgundy, in March 2018, and singles “Mardi Gras for Christmas” and “Alone at Christmas” in November 2018.

Video edited by Trevor BantaLyrics from Emily Dickinson’s original poem “I felt a Funeral, in my Brain”: I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, And Mourners to and fro Kept treading – treading – till it seemed That Sense was breaking through – And when they all were seated, A Service, like a Drum – Kept beating – beating – till I thought My mind was going numb – And then I heard them lift a Box And creak across my Soul With the same Boots of Lead, again, Then Space – began to toll As all the Heavens were a Bell, And Being, but an Ear, And I, and Silence, some strange Race, Wrecked, solitary, here – And then a Plank in Reason, broke, And I dropped down, and down – And hit a World, at every plunge, And Finished knowing – then – And then I heard them lift a Box And creak across my Soul With the same Boots of Lead, again, Then Space – began to toll, I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, And Mourners to and fro Kept treading – treading – till it seemed That Sense was breaking through –

Lyrics
Come on, all you stand-up men
You self-empowered beginners
And all your lucky ladies
To whom you write your letters
I keep moving through my days
As if I had never met her
But ever since I, I gave up hope
I’ve been feeling so much better
Yeah, I’m feelin’ so much better
But ever since I gave up hope
I’ve been feelin’ so much better
So here’s a mighty revelation
That’s sure to cure what ails ya
That everyone’s just a disappointment
And everyone’s a failure
And this we shall celebrate
In our finest regalia
Like a choir of shining angels
A congregation of Vahalia
I’m feelin’ so much better
Ever since I thought I gave up hope
I’ve been feeling so much better
You hear that bell now
You hear it ringing
You hear it ringing
The bells of St. Jude
So fill your lungs now
‘Cause we’ll be singin’
We’ll be singin’
We love you, St. Jude
We’ll be singin’
We love you, St. Jude
Feelin’ so much better
Feelin’ so much better
Feelin’ so much better
Feelin’ so much better
