Paul John Weller (born John William Weller; 25 May 1958) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Weller achieved fame with the punk rock/new wave/mod revival band The Jam. He had further success with the blue-eyed soul music of The Style Council (1983–1989) before establishing himself as a solo artist with his eponymous 1992 album.
The Style Council was my favorite band during my HS years in Ithaca, NY. This was a phase, from 9th Grade to Senior year, of Herman Hesse’s, Narcissus, and Goldmund reading pleasure, accompanied by a soundtrack from Roxy Music, the Cure, Squeeze, and The Style Council. The Style Council got me through many restless evenings of hormonal flux.
Why reminisce about Paul Weller and the Style Council today? Might it have something to do with the recent celebration of so many of his newbie offspring just celebrated the other day on Durham Cool? Most definitely yes, but something more stirs up memories of Mr. Weller and the timeless songs of the Style Council. When one makes any effort to explore contemporary music, it is no accident that one finds oneself exploring the roots of the current trend if one is responsible and rooted in a sound journalistic tradition.
It is an unfortunate and deprived life without the beautiful songs of Paul Weller, The Jam, and The Style Council. I could not subject my readers to such a life.

I remember watching this live on tv back in 1993. At the time, I thought it was a great performance. Looking back on it, this was the high point in Weller’s entire music career as it showcased his full range of talent. Also, I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was a serious guitarist in the mold of Wilko Johnson and Mick Green. This is sometimes overlooked as he didn’t play long solos or full-on arpeggio style like Johnny Marr or Peter Buck. Paul Weller was unique and, like Morrissey, actually wrote lyrics that had meaning and not simply words that rhymed. Genius.

Paul Weller has put all rumors that he is gay to rest today in an interview.
Weller’s became a gay icon after he softened the Jam’s aggressive image in his 1980s pop act The Style Council. He admits that these were his sexually ambiguous years, saying: “I went through my ‘confused sexuality’ time in The Style Council” but he never went further than stroking his keyboardist’s earlobes in a video.
Weller admits to being bemused by his popularity among the gay community but states that he is completely heterosexual. “The truth is, I don’t really fancy blokes.”****
