Damien Rice came to you via my personal Youtube journey last evening.
Did you know the Youtube Algorithm for Ben Howard + Trevor Hall=Damien Rice? No need to replicate; occasionally, the algorithm brings a river of charms.
Damien Rice working with key collaborator Lisa Hannigan is now in the Durham Cool Mix. We know now of the creative turbulence that is currently keeping them on separate artistic paths. We are sad about this news. Lisa Hannigan is doing well on her own. Old information to you, new to us. Over 90 Million Youtube likes to tell us we are late to the party once again. Drama is something we effort to avoid, but sometimes the lure of creative chemistry lures us.
The creative chemistry of Lisa Hannigan and Damien on Volcano; is an apparent, simmering, palpable co-creative effort. The Lisa Hannigan contribution/collaboration with Damien Rice is behind us. We have a limited time with the videos on this page, as posters have warned. YouTube is removing these videos each day due to license expiration. Enjoy them while they last. Capture as much of this superior collaboration as you can.
An official statement read, “After much thought and discussion, Damien has decided that his professional relationship with Lisa Hannigan has run its creative course. As a result, Lisa will not appear at any of the upcoming live shows. Lisa is embarking on her artistic endeavors, and there are no plans for them to work together in the foreseeable future. The current band on tour are Damien Rice, Joel Shearer, Shane Fitzsimons, Tom Osander, and Vyvienne Long.”

I skipped through the talking, but Hannigan and Rice have had a whirlwind relationship. They dated during the making of “O.” On tour, tensions rose and continued to get worse during the recording of “9.” The whole situation culminated with Rice firing her from a time in 2007. In 2009, Rice opened up about what happened and how much he regretted it. He tried to reconnect with her, but she never responded to him. They haven’t talked since the night she left the tour.
For you guys who care about Damien Rice’s view on Lisa Hannigan, he gave an interview in September 2014. Just google “I opened every can of worms I could”. Here are some highlights of his interview:
This is the first Damien Rice album not to feature Lisa Hannigan. To give a sense of how critical a part she played in his recording history, consider that hers is the last voice the listener hears on his much-adored debut album, O, and the first they hear on its follow-up, 9.
“It wasn’t even so much missing the voice,” he says. “It was just missing Lisa. It was missing my partner in the studio. She was not afraid, to be honest with me if she didn’t like something. That was very healthy for me, whereas initially, for this, I was on my own without somebody to tell me, ‘This is crap – do that again’. I was missing that and that’s why I reached out to Rick [Rubin, the album’s producer] – because Lisa wasn’t around, I needed somebody who wasn’t going to want to change me but be able to stand there in front of me and tell me ‘not good enough’.”
He had wanted her to sing on the album. “I spoke to her about it and asked her what she thought of it [making music together] and she very beautifully responded saying that she thinks it’s best for both of us that we” – here he pauses for a long time to find the right words – “do our own thing for now.
“The moment I got that response – boom! – everything started working. Because I could let go and I was like ‘ok, I’m doing this alone.”
That sense of liberation was tinged with sadness. “I don’t think the two of us will work together again,” he says, looking at his hands, “but there’s no reason why we couldn’t play live together again sometime.”
I ask him if he would ever change anything about the past. “No,” he says, without hesitation. “I think it’s perfect. That’s why sometimes when people bring up the Lisa thing, I am so grateful for everything I experienced with her because I got to learn amazing things.”
Would he trade the hard times for her still to be part of his music and personal life? This time, there’s a long pause. “I am totally different now than when I did that Hot Press interview [in which he declared his love for Hannigan a few years after they split]. My perspective on things is totally different. I wouldn’t change a single thing I ever said, even hurtful stuff.

Damien Rice – Volcano – Official Video
The official video for Damien Rice’s song “Volcano” from his album O.
Volcano from Damien Rice’s album, O, was my introduction to Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, a dynamic musical duo extraordinaire. This musical pairing was destined, passionate, and more than the sum of its parts. It was short-lived as they attempted too much, adding romance to the mix, but we are better off having witnessed the best features, like this great song, Volcano, and so many others on the O album.

A great opportunity to observe the study of contrast between this same performance in front of a live audience vs. a private backstage concert with 3 members of the audience in the other video, featured below.

It was in Oct. 2016, in Berlin, during Michelberger Music.
Between each show of the festival, we were kidnapping a person in the audience, which we were takenen to a secret room where an artist was waiting.
Between the two of them, a unique experience: a One To One concert.

Lisa Hannigan Vicar Street Interview
Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan – 9 Crimes – 2006-11-17 Live on Conan.
After a seven-year hiatus, Damien Rice returns with a stunning new album produced by the inimitable Rick Rubin.
Damien sits down with KCRW’s Jason Bentley for an in-depth interview on Morning Becomes Eclectic.
Jason Bentley Interviews Damien Rice

There is real wisdom in this interview. Listen closely to Damien’s analysis of his 6-year introspection of so-called negative events (see shadow work) and his realization (see awareness). This is a great example of an embodiment of Buddhist principles. Worthy of our attention.
Beautiful Iceland. How merry few Americans have visited Iceland? Is there still time to visit Iceland? May we make it work during this epidemic? The short answer is probably not during the epidemic so rather live in Iceland through Damien’s Icelandic voyage.
Damien Rice isn’t the archetypal popstar. After an 8-year hiatus – an eternity for a mainstream artist – the Irishman is back with his new album My Favorite Faded Fantasy.
Recorded between Los Angeles and Iceland and produced by Rick Rubin, the drop marks his third release, following 2006’s 9. In advance of its November release, we caught up with the singer and his collaborators in Reykjavik, for an exclusive video interview with Best Fit.
We chatted with Rice about the period of creative apathy that followed his second record and how he was able to get back to a place where he was excited to make music again and got some of his collaborators to discuss their experiences of working with him.
