Why Yoga and who is GetACTV?
The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’. The daily practice of Yoga saved my life, improved clarity, and restored balance and equilibrium.
Our renewed interest in the practice of Yoga began in 1995 at the personal Durham NC household of Joy Anandi. 3 Days a week her adult students would assemble and be led by our Teacher Joy and her avid Persian cats. Joy bred Persian cats, raised them, and sold them. This Hatha Yoga class was a perfect re-introduction, for two men, and three women. Each class ended with the final asana, Shavasana (Shavasana is the pronunciation of the Sanskrit word “savasana.” It’s a resting and restorative pose, or asana, typically used at the end of a yoga session. The Sanskrit word means “corpse pose,” because students practicing this pose lie face-up on the ground, arms and legs comfortably spread, eyes closed.) When we opened our eyes and came back into standing pose, 4 of Joy’s mature Persian cats would be positioned like Sentries around the room, avidly staring at us. The year 2000 came and we found ourselves 3 days a week at Bryan Carey’s Patanjalis Yoga Studio of Durham on Geer Street. Serious Yoga and 23 years of meditation were underway.
