Ibrahim Maalouf takes inspiration from his Arabic culture, using a custom-made trumpet that allows him to put Arabic maqams at the heart of his jazz. His creativity extends to writing film scores, an album of one being Jazz Mann’s introduction to him (‘Wind’‘reviewed April 10, 2013, https://www.thejazzmann.com/reviews/review/ibrahim-maalouf-wind ). He seems to be a musical polymath who is always looking for the next project.
Watching the live performances featured herein, you will immediately notice Maalouf’s intentional collaboration between the band and the audience. Ibrahim rides the energetic exchange with his audience like a Taoist master. The Maalouf community is a hive, with each individual participating in the trance of prayer, daydreaming, and homeland memory together and alone.
