Main Street, from Los Lobos Tin, Can Trust, is an excellent groove track for the start of a short or long trip.  Some who have not heard the entire or early years of Los Lobos might regard them as apolitical based on hearing the song alone. This song is best described as a tribute to east LA’s community chill cruise vibe. The main street is more than a cool vibe, chill driving down with windows open like the beer bottles in all the Amigo’s hands- This song is about the feeling of being home and noticing/observing those walking down the boulevard with the sun on their faces. At the same time, you stroll up to the traffic lights with little concern about whether you receive a green or red light. ” Got a green light, a red light, no matter which way I go.”

Vocalist and guitarist David Hidalgo and drummer Louie Pérez met at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, California, and bonded over their mutual affinity for musical acts such as Fairport Convention, Randy Newman, and Ry Cooder. Pérez recalls, “We’re looking at each other, ‘You like this stuff? I thought I was the only weird one.’ So I went to his house one day for about a year, which we spent listening to records, playing guitars, and starting to write songs.” The two borrowed reel-to-reel recorders from a friend and created multitrack recordings of music spanning from parody songs to free-form jazz. They later enlisted fellow students Frank González, Cesar Rosas, and Conrad Lozano to complete the group’s lineup in 1973.

Los Lobos How will the Wolf Survive

Nothing better than walking down the boulevard
Feeling the sun on my face
Watching Maggie and Connie with their little kids
Running ’round all over the place

Got a red light
Got a green light
Don’t matter which way I go

Down main street
Down easy street
It’s when I feel like I’m home

Nothing better than strolling down the boulevard
With a little time on my side
All worries gone away to somewhere else
Only with one blink of an eye

Got a red light
Got a green light
Don’t matter which way I go
Going home
The only place I know
Take me there
Where the days go slow

Nothing better than running down the boulevard
Getting a little dirt on my shoes
With my brothers and sisters hanging all around
Chasing away all of my blues

Beautiful song, with no politics, just observation, and commentary. Their staple. Have listened to these guys lo these many years, (30+), and they have always been the consummate musicians, writers, and performers.

Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms – A Classical Musician’s First Listen and Reaction

Vlad tells me that the album ”Brothers in Arms” topped the charts for weeks on end, and, although he says the album contained several iconic songs, he chose me as the title piece. Since I have never listened to Dire Straits, I have no idea about the other songs on the album, but, listening to this one, I can understand why the album stayed at the top for such a long time.
