The fifth and most ambitious studio project of TTB’s storied career: ‘I Am The Moon,’ an epic undertaking in four albums and 24 original songs. Inspired by a mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers and emotionally driven by the isolation and disconnection of the pandemic era, ‘I Am The Moon’ totals more than two hours of new music and will be released in successive months beginning with ‘I Am The Moon – I. Crescent,’ available now on CD and digital.
In addition TTB will present an immersive visual companion to each audio release. The decision to sequence and release ‘I Am The Moon’ in four distinct episodes came “when we started thinking of records we love,” says Derek, citing Axis: Bold as Love, the 1967 LP by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. “It’s 36 minutes long. That’s the way to digest a record.” With that approach in mind, TTB will present ‘I Am The Moon: The Films,’ combining studio and performance footage with atmospheric photography and imagery capturing the musicâs kaleidoscopic textures. The corresponding films will debut three days prior to each audio release, offering our loyal community an early opportunity to digest each album in its entirety as a communal listening and viewing experience via the bandâs YouTube channel. The first episode debuted on Tuesday, May 31st on the band’s Youtube channel.

During the pandemic and the isolation it brought, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, among the most admired and successful live musicians in the world, was looking for something to hold onto and a way to connect and their craft. They had just come off a triumphant performance of Derek & The Dominoesâ classic Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs with Trey Anastasio at the LOCKN Festival, which led to last summerâs release of the acclaimed live album Layla: Revisited. Looking for an idea, TTB vocalist Mike Mattison drew inspiration from Laylaâs rich source: Layla and Majnun, the legendary ninety-page narrative poem by 12th-century Sufi poet Nizami about intersecting lovers. As a writing exercise, Mattison challenged the group to explore the deeper themes of the poem. He pointed out that Claptonâs âLaylaâ addresses only one element of the poetry â Majnunâs love madness â while the poem itself contains a variety of themes: Family drama, class discrimination, isolation, condemnation, and the high price that single-minded mania, even in the name of love, exacts. (Indeed, Layla and Majnun are the possible inspiration for Shakespeareâs Romeo and Juliet and many other Eastern and Western literary classics.)

The Derek Trucks Interview
Derek Trucks is an American guitarist, songwriter, and founder of The Derek Trucks Band. He became an official member of The Allman Brothers Band in 1999. In 2010, he formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band with his wife, blues singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi. He is one of the greatest slide guitarists of all-time.

The Allman Brothersâ next of kin Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi play the sort of loose and rootsy musicâcall it jam-rock if you mustâthat just sounds better in live settings than under studio dissection. But thatâs just one reason why their 2012 live album Everybodyâs Talkinâ sounds so easy on the ears. Tedeschi and Trucks walk you through their record collections with a solid roster of cover material. They open with the title track, penned by folk deity Fred Neil. Their reinvented version of the tune boogies on a sunflared, bell-bottomed strut that most coffeehouse folkies never knew. Similarly, the old Underground Railroad spiritual âBound for Gloryâ gets an incredible reworking, with a bluesy slide-guitar solo introducing the tune before the band comes in and turns it into a smoldering groove. The group’s take on Stevie Wonderâs âUptightâ is perfectly funky.
