Efforts continue to secure the release of the imprisoned Tibetan language advocate Tashi Wangchuk |
|
On 19 July, Tashi’s lawyers confirmed that an appeal had been submitted to Qinghai High Court. This appeal could be heard any time. Previously, Tashi’s lawyers had met him in prison and confirmed that he is in good health and determined to fight his five year prison sentence.
Free Tibet is monitoring these developments and will update supporters when more information is available. In the meantime, if you have not already done so, please write to the Chinese Minister of Justice, calling on them to immediately and unconditionally release Tashi Wangchuk. |

Who is Tashi Wangchuk?
Tashi Wangchuk is a Tibetan language campaigner who gave an interview to the New York Times in 2015. He spoke about his efforts to ensure that every Tibetan has access to education in their mother tongue. Shortly after this, in January 2016, he was arrested and charged with “inciting separatism”. On 22 May 2018, after more than two years in detention, he was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. |

Free Tibet hits WOMAD Festival

The team spent last weekend raising awareness at world music festival in Wiltshire |
|
From Thursday the 26th to Sunday the 29th of July, the Free Tibet team were in Charlton Park, Wiltshire, attending the World Of Music And Dance festival. We spent the weekend speaking with people about Tibet and had a lot of fantastic conversations.
We also gathered petition signatures, raised money, sold merchandise and signed festival-goers up to our mailing list. Thank you to everyone who came to visit our stall. We had a great time meeting you all. |
|
We also brought along our very own mandala and invited passers-by to paint a section. After four days, and over a hundred budding artists, we had a fantastic piece of community-created artwork! |
|
We love participating events like these, as they are a great opportunity to engage with new audiences about the Tibet issue. We hope to be able to attend many more in the future! |

A day-long celebration of Tibetan culture, history and activism |

We are very excited to welcome our special guests, the Tashi Lhunpo monks, who will be opening our festival with a beautiful ritual before creating an intricate sand mandala. There will also be educational displays, campaigning activities and stalls selling Free Tibet merchandise and Tibetan products.
On top of this, we have an events schedule full of talks, workshops, a film screening and more.

International Tibet groups join forces

Tibet support groups from around the world have been meeting in order to discuss joint campaigns and pool resources |
|
Free Tibet’s friends, the International Tibet Network, hosted regional meetings in June and July, giving Free Tibet and its research partner Tibet Watch the opportunity to meet their allies from other Tibet organisations.
In June, Free Tibet’s research manager John Jones attended the European regional meeting in Italy. There he met with Tibet supporters from France to Russia and everywhere in between to discuss common strategies for working on a number of campaigns. This included further plans for work on Tashi Wangchuk’s case and a strategy to resist China’s recent pressure on western companies, which has seen a number of businesses forced to back downafter they suggested that Tibet was distinct from China. |
