Dire Straits

Mark Knopfler – lead vocals (all tracks), lead and rhythm guitars

David Knopfler – rhythm guitar, backing vocals

John Illsley – bass guitar, backing vocals

Pick Withers – drums

This song is about domestic abuse. The lyrics in the music show the man’s perspective. However, they are both portrayed in the guitar riff. The first part of the riff is about the man, and the second part replies to the first part, which is about the woman. Throughout the song, the interpretation doesn’t change, and the woman’s reply doesn’t change; she stays with him. However, the riff changes at the song’s end, and the woman’s answer is different; she finally leaves him. She broke free. The guitar goes wild.

If we look at the song’s lyrics, we will see that it is a “love affair” between a guy and a girl. The band had a lot of positive reviews for this song because it is a pure melody with some unexplained love issues. The title alludes to something that needs to be clarified, and the question is where the girl thinks she is going.

Roughly, this woman or girl has left her boyfriend to save herself from future danger. The sense in this song is genuinely terrifying. Sadly, too many women would recognize the man whose fear of his pride and brutality makes him think he can control his woman. He believes she’ll be nothing without him, and he tries to make her feel that herself.

The song’s lyric is emotional, and the relaxing guitar solo in the background makes you think about your relationship. Hit the play button below and enjoy this classic hit song by Dire Straits.

Where do you think you’re going?
Don’t you know it’s dark outside?
Where do you think you’re going?
I wish they’d care about my pride
Where do you think you’re going?
I think you don’t know
You got no way of knowing
You got no place you can go
I understand your changes
How long before you reach the door
I know where you think you’re going
I know what you came here for
And now I’m sick of joking
You know I like you to be free
Where do you think you’re going?
I think you’d better go with me, girl
You say there is no reason
But you still find cause to doubt me
When you ain’t with me, girl
You’re gonna be without me
Where do you think you’re going?
Don’t you know it’s dark outside?
Where do you think you’re going?
I wish they’d care about my pride
And now I’m sick of joking
You know I like you to be free
Where do you think you’re going?
I think you’d better go with me, girl
Come on

Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms – A Classical Musician’s First Listen and Reaction

Vlad tells me that the album ”Brothers in Arms” topped the charts for weeks on end, and, although he says the album contained several iconic songs, he chose me as the title piece. Since I have never listened to Dire Straits, I have no idea about the other songs on the album, but, listening to this one, I can understand why the album stayed at the top for such a long time.
