Yo-Yo Ma at the Prom 2015

Yo-Yo Ma Bach Cello Suite No.1 in G Major

Continuing the Durham Cool tradition of featuring music posts on the Weekends, here is A sublime sonic selection from Yo-Yo Ma, Bach-Suite for Cello in G Major. If you have not heard this prior, close your eyes and drink this fully into your heart and mind. Same advice for the initiated. This will go along way towards healing the negative residuals of our current political environment.

2018 Bach Project

The cyclone of exuberance that is Yo-Yo Ma tore through the Washington, D.C., area at the end of November. The cellist is in the middle of a sprawling tour called the Bach Project, which involves performances of Bach’s six solo-cello suites in thirty-six places, on six continents. Classical music has taken to attaching the word “project” to undertakings large and small. If two or more Brahms symphonies are played, it becomes a Brahms Project. The Bach Project, though, is deserving of the name. Most of Ma’s concerts are slated for large spaces capable of accommodating thousands. Each is accompanied by a Day of Action, in which Ma meets with local artists, community leaders, students, and activists, exploring how culture can contribute to social progress. In Washington, the venue was the National Cathedral. The Day of Action took place in Anacostia, the historic African-American neighborhood in southeast D.C.

Six Evolutions Bach Cello Suites Yo Yo Ma

What power does this music possess that even today, after 300 years, it continues to help us navigate through troubled times?” This is the question that Yo-Yo Ma posted on his website ahead of this release. It’s one that he wonderfully answers in his third recording of Bach’s six cello suites, still among the greatest works for the solo instrument. The music weaves an unbreakable spell over its performers and, however many times it’s played, continues to inspire thanks to the profundity of its message and its deeply moving humanity. This is Ma’s most probing and expressive recording to date, and a reminder of his supreme artistry.

Yo-Yo Ma

In these days of anxiety, I wanted to find a way to continue to share some of the music that gives me comfort.
